LEITURA Bíblia Sagrada     Versão - João Ferreira de Almeida - 2ª edição PT-BR King James Version Gênesis 19 Mateus  18  Neemias 8 LEITURA  18º DIA  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  Gênesis 19 1 Ao anoitecer, vieram os dois anjos a Sodoma, a cuja entrada estava Ló assentado; este, quando os viu, levantou-se e, indo ao seu encontro, prostrou-se, rosto em terra. 2 E disse-lhes: Eis agora, meus senhores, vinde para a casa do vosso servo, pernoitai nela e lavai os pés; levantar-vos-eis de madrugada e seguireis o vosso caminho. Responderam eles: Não; passaremos a noite na praça. 3 Instou-lhes muito, e foram e entraram em casa dele; deu-lhes um banquete, fez assar uns pães asmos, e eles comeram. 4 Mas, antes que se deitassem, os homens daquela cidade cercaram a casa, os homens de Sodoma, tanto os moços como os velhos, sim, todo o povo de todos os lados; 5 e chamaram por Ló e lhe disseram: Onde estão os homens que, à noitinha, entraram em tua casa? Traze-os fora a nós para que abusemos deles. 6 Saiu-lhes, então, Ló à porta, fechou-a após si 7 e lhes disse: Rogo-vos, meus irmãos, que não façais mal; 8 tenho duas filhas, virgens, eu vo-las trarei; tratai-as como vos parecer, porém nada façais a estes homens, porquanto se acham sob a proteção de meu teto. 9 Eles, porém, disseram: Retira-te daí. E acrescentaram: Só ele é estrangeiro, veio morar entre nós e pretende ser juiz em tudo? A ti, pois, faremos pior do que a eles. E arremessaram-se contra o homem, contra Ló, e se chegaram para arrombar a porta. 10 Porém os homens, estendendo a mão, fizeram entrar Ló e fecharam a porta; 11 e feriram de cegueira aos que estavam fora, desde o menor até ao maior, de modo que se cansaram à procura da porta. 12 Então, disseram os homens a Ló: Tens aqui alguém mais dos teus? Genro, e teus filhos, e tuas filhas, todos quantos tens na cidade, faze-os sair deste lugar; 13 pois vamos destruir este lugar, porque o seu clamor se tem aumentado, chegando até à presença do SENHOR; e o SENHOR nos enviou a destruí-lo. 14 Então, saiu Ló e falou a seus genros, aos que estavam para casar com suas filhas e disse: Levantai-vos, saí deste lugar, porque o SENHOR há de destruir a cidade. Acharam, porém, que ele gracejava com eles. 15 Ao amanhecer, apertaram os anjos com Ló, dizendo: Levanta-te, toma tua mulher e tuas duas filhas, que aqui se encontram, para que não pereças no castigo da cidade. 16 Como, porém, se demorasse, pegaram-no os homens pela mão, a ele, a sua mulher e as duas filhas, sendo-lhe o SENHOR misericordioso, e o tiraram, e o puseram fora da cidade. 17 Havendo-os levado fora, disse um deles: Livra-te, salva a tua vida; não olhes para trás, nem pares em toda a campina; foge para o monte, para que não pereças. 18 Respondeu-lhes Ló: Assim não, Senhor meu! 19 Eis que o teu servo achou mercê diante de ti, e engrandeceste a tua misericórdia que me mostraste, salvando-me a vida; não posso escapar no monte, pois receio que o mal me apanhe, e eu morra. 20 Eis aí uma cidade perto para a qual eu posso fugir, e é pequena. Permite que eu fuja para lá (porventura, não é pequena?), e nela viverá a minha alma. 21 Disse-lhe: Quanto a isso, estou de acordo, para não subverter a cidade de que acabas de falar. 22 Apressa-te, refugia-te nela; pois nada posso fazer, enquanto não tiveres chegado lá. Por isso, se chamou Zoar o nome da cidade. 23 Saía o sol sobre a terra, quando Ló entrou em Zoar. 24 Então, fez o SENHOR chover enxofre e fogo, da parte do SENHOR, sobre Sodoma e Gomorra. 25 E subverteu aquelas cidades, e toda a campina, e todos os moradores das cidades, e o que nascia na terra. 26 E a mulher de Ló olhou para trás e converteu-se numa estátua de sal. 27 Tendo-se levantado Abraão de madrugada, foi para o lugar onde estivera na presença do SENHOR; 28 e olhou para Sodoma e Gomorra e para toda a terra da campina e viu que da terra subia fumaça, como a fumarada de uma fornalha. 29 Ao tempo que destruía as cidades da campina, lembrou-se Deus de Abraão e tirou a Ló do meio das ruínas, quando subverteu as cidades em que Ló habitara. 30 Subiu Ló de Zoar e habitou no monte, ele e suas duas filhas, porque receavam permanecer em Zoar; e habitou numa caverna, e com ele as duas filhas. 31 Então, a primogênita disse à mais moça: Nosso pai está velho, e não há homem na terra que venha unir-se conosco, segundo o costume de toda terra. 32 Vem, façamo-lo beber vinho, deitemo-nos com ele e conservemos a descendência de nosso pai. 33 Naquela noite, pois, deram a beber vinho a seu pai, e, entrando a primogênita, se deitou com ele, sem que ele o notasse, nem quando ela se deitou, nem quando se levantou. 34 No dia seguinte, disse a primogênita à mais nova: Deitei-me, ontem, à noite, com o meu pai. Demos-lhe a beber vinho também esta noite; entra e deita-te com ele, para que preservemos a descendência de nosso pai. 35 De novo, pois, deram, aquela noite, a beber vinho a seu pai, e, entrando a mais nova, se deitou com ele, sem que ele o notasse, nem quando ela se deitou, nem quando se levantou. 36 E assim as duas filhas de Ló conceberam do próprio pai. 37 A primogênita deu à luz um filho e lhe chamou Moabe: é o pai dos moabitas, até ao dia de hoje. 38 A mais nova também deu à luz um filho e lhe chamou Ben-Ami: é o pai dos filhos de Amom, até ao dia de hoje. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  19 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; 2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. 3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. 6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. 8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. 9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. 10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. 11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. 12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: 13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it. 14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. 15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. 16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. 18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord: 19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: 20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. 21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. 22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. 26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. 27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord: 28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. 29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt. 30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the first born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  Mateus 18 1 Naquela hora, aproximaram-se de Jesus os discípulos, perguntando: Quem é, porventura, o maior no reino dos céus? 2 E Jesus, chamando uma criança, colocou-a no meio deles. 3 E disse: Em verdade vos digo que, se não vos converterdes e não vos tornardes como crianças, de modo algum entrareis no reino dos céus. 4 Portanto, aquele que se humilhar como esta criança, esse é o maior no reino dos céus. 5 E quem receber uma criança, tal como esta, em meu nome, a mim me recebe. 6 Qualquer, porém, que fizer tropeçar a um destes pequeninos que crêem em mim, melhor lhe fora que se lhe pendurasse ao pescoço uma grande pedra de moinho, e fosse afogado na profundeza do mar. 7 Ai do mundo, por causa dos escândalos; porque é inevitável que venham escândalos, mas ai do homem pelo qual vem o escândalo! 8 Portanto, se a tua mão ou o teu pé te faz tropeçar, corta-o e lança-o fora de ti; melhor é entrares na vida manco ou aleijado do que, tendo duas mãos ou dois pés, seres lançado no fogo eterno. 9 Se um dos teus olhos te faz tropeçar, arranca-o e lança-o fora de ti; melhor é entrares na vida com um só dos teus olhos do que, tendo dois, seres lançado no inferno de fogo. 10 Vede, não desprezeis a qualquer destes pequeninos; porque eu vos afirmo que os seus anjos nos céus vêem incessantemente a face de meu Pai celeste. 11 [Porque o Filho do Homem veio salvar o que estava perdido.] 12 Que vos parece? Se um homem tiver cem ovelhas, e uma delas se extraviar, não deixará ele nos montes as noventa e nove, indo procurar a que se extraviou? 13 E, se porventura a encontra, em verdade vos digo que maior prazer sentirá por causa desta do que pelas noventa e nove que não se extraviaram. 14 Assim, pois, não é da vontade de vosso Pai celeste que pereça um só destes pequeninos. 15 Se teu irmão pecar [contra ti], vai argüi-lo entre ti e ele só. Se ele te ouvir, ganhaste a teu irmão. 16 Se, porém, não te ouvir, toma ainda contigo uma ou duas pessoas, para que, pelo depoimento de duas ou três testemunhas, toda palavra se estabeleça. 17 E, se ele não os atender, dize-o à igreja; e, se recusar ouvir também a igreja, considera-o como gentio e publicano. 18 Em verdade vos digo que tudo o que ligardes na terra terá sido ligado nos céus, e tudo o que desligardes na terra terá sido desligado nos céus. 19 Em verdade também vos digo que, se dois dentre vós, sobre a terra, concordarem a respeito de qualquer coisa que, porventura, pedirem, ser-lhes-á concedida por meu Pai, que está nos céus. 20 Porque, onde estiverem dois ou três reunidos em meu nome, ali estou no meio deles. 21 Então, Pedro, aproximando-se, lhe perguntou: Senhor, até quantas vezes meu irmão pecará contra mim, que eu lhe perdoe? Até sete vezes? 22 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Não te digo que até sete vezes, mas até setenta vezes sete. 23 Por isso, o reino dos céus é semelhante a um rei que resolveu ajustar contas com os seus servos. 24 E, passando a fazê-lo, trouxeram-lhe um que lhe devia dez mil talentos. 25 Não tendo ele, porém, com que pagar, ordenou o senhor que fosse vendido ele, a mulher, os filhos e tudo quanto possuía e que a dívida fosse paga. 26 Então, o servo, prostrando-se reverente, rogou: Sê paciente comigo, e tudo te pagarei. 27 E o senhor daquele servo, compadecendo-se, mandou-o embora e perdoou-lhe a dívida. 28 Saindo, porém, aquele servo, encontrou um dos seus conservos que lhe devia cem denários; e, agarrando-o, o sufocava, dizendo: Paga-me o que me deves. 29 Então, o seu conservo, caindo-lhe aos pés, lhe implorava: Sê paciente comigo, e te pagarei. 30 Ele, entretanto, não quis; antes, indo-se, o lançou na prisão, até que saldasse a dívida. 31 Vendo os seus companheiros o que se havia passado, entristeceram-se muito e foram relatar ao seu senhor tudo que acontecera. 32 Então, o seu senhor, chamando-o, lhe disse: Servo malvado, perdoei-te aquela dívida toda porque me suplicaste; 33 não devias tu, igualmente, compadecer-te do teu conservo, como também eu me compadeci de ti? 34 E, indignando-se, o seu senhor o entregou aos verdugos, até que lhe pagasse toda a dívida. 35 Assim também meu Pai celeste vos fará, se do íntimo não perdoardes cada um a seu irmão. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  18 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. 6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! 8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. 9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. 10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. 11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. 12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? 13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray. 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. 15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. 18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. 21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. 28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. 29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  Neemias 8 1 Em chegando o sétimo mês, e estando os filhos de Israel nas suas cidades, todo o povo se ajuntou como um só homem, na praça, diante da Porta das Águas; e disseram a Esdras, o escriba, que trouxesse o Livro da Lei de Moisés, que o SENHOR tinha prescrito a Israel. 2 Esdras, o sacerdote, trouxe a Lei perante a congregação, tanto de homens como de mulheres e de todos os que eram capazes de entender o que ouviam. Era o primeiro dia do sétimo mês. 3 E leu no livro, diante da praça, que está fronteira à Porta das Águas, desde a alva até ao meio-dia, perante homens e mulheres e os que podiam entender; e todo o povo tinha os ouvidos atentos ao Livro da Lei. 4 Esdras, o escriba, estava num púlpito de madeira, que fizeram para aquele fim; estavam em pé junto a ele, à sua direita, Matitias, Sema, Anaías, Urias, Hilquias e Maaséias; e à sua esquerda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquias, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarias e Mesulão. 5 Esdras abriu o livro à vista de todo o povo, porque estava acima dele; abrindo-o ele, todo o povo se pôs em pé. 6 Esdras bendisse ao SENHOR, o grande Deus; e todo o povo respondeu: Amém! Amém! E, levantando as mãos; inclinaram-se e adoraram o SENHOR, com o rosto em terra. 7 E Jesua, Bani, Serebias, Jamim, Acube, Sabetai, Hodias, Maaséias, Quelita, Azarias, Jozabade, Hanã, Pelaías e os levitas ensinavam o povo na Lei; e o povo estava no seu lugar. 8 Leram no livro, na Lei de Deus, claramente, dando explicações, de maneira que entendessem o que se lia. 9 Neemias, que era o governador, e Esdras, sacerdote e escriba, e os levitas que ensinavam todo o povo lhe disseram: Este dia é consagrado ao SENHOR, vosso Deus, pelo que não pranteeis, nem choreis. Porque todo o povo chorava, ouvindo as palavras da Lei. 10 Disse-lhes mais: ide, comei carnes gordas, tomai bebidas doces e enviai porções aos que não têm nada preparado para si; porque este dia é consagrado ao nosso Senhor; portanto, não vos entristeçais, porque a alegria do SENHOR é a vossa força. 11 Os levitas fizeram calar todo o povo, dizendo: Calai-vos, porque este dia é santo; e não estejais contristados. 12 Então, todo o povo se foi a comer, a beber, a enviar porções e a regozijar-se grandemente, porque tinham entendido as palavras que lhes foram explicadas. 13 No dia seguinte, ajuntaram-se a Esdras, o escriba, os cabeças das famílias de todo o povo, os sacerdotes e os levitas, e isto para atentarem nas palavras da Lei. 14 Acharam escrito na Lei que o SENHOR ordenara por intermédio de Moisés que os filhos de Israel habitassem em cabanas, durante a festa do sétimo mês; 15 que publicassem e fizessem passar pregão por todas as suas cidades e em Jerusalém, dizendo: Saí ao monte e trazei ramos de oliveiras, ramos de zambujeiros, ramos de murtas, ramos de palmeiras e ramos de árvores frondosas, para fazer cabanas, como está escrito. 16 Saiu, pois, o povo, trouxeram os ramos e fizeram para si cabanas, cada um no seu terraço, e nos seus pátios, e nos átrios da Casa de Deus, e na praça da Porta das Águas, e na praça da Porta de Efraim. 17 Toda a congregação dos que tinham voltado do cativeiro fez cabanas e nelas habitou; porque nunca fizeram assim os filhos de Israel, desde os dias de Josué, filho de Num, até àquele dia; e houve mui grande alegria. 18 Dia após dia, leu Esdras no Livro da Lei de Deus, desde o primeiro dia até ao último; e celebraram a festa por sete dias; no oitavo dia, houve uma assembléia solene, segundo o prescrito. ..... ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦  8 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded to Israel. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. 9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength. 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved. 12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them. 13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law. 14 And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month: 15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. 16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. 18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God.
